Manatees are herbivores therefor to digest all those plants, they have a cecum. The cecum is a digestive tract that leads to the large intestine. It is believed to be as large as that of a regular sized horse. The animal needs a cecum to help eliminate the bacteria that can be found in such food sources, such as algae and plants found in the water, otherwise it can make the animal that consumes it very ill.
Like most large animals, a manatees reproductive rate is very low. On average, one calf is born every two or five years and twins are very rare. Manatee males are called bulls and are ready to mate at ages 9 and 10. Females are called cows and are ready to mate when they reach age three or five. Before mating, there is much verbal communication and touching that takes place. This forms a mating herd. Since mating takes place in the water, there is very much that we do not know about.
