West Indian manatees are found mostly in the coastal and inland areas of Central America and along the northern coast of South America in warm, shallow, slow moving waters with temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and water as low as 1 meter. They inhabit places that flourish with seagrass and other vegetation such as rivers, bays, canals, and estuaries. Manatees are mostly found in fresh, brackish, and saline or salt waters.
A loss of habitat is a serious threat to manatees all over the world. The Florida Manatee Recovery Plan was started to protect manatees from unnatural deaths and from a loss of habitat that has left them endangered with around 4,831 manatees living today as of January 2014.
